about

This Song Contains Interpolations of "Productive" From The Musical , "The Material World" Music and Lyrics by Dan Fishback
"We are all born naked and the rest is drag" so says the legendary Rupaul. Keeping up that drag is a lot on the soul. Your form of drag finds its way into your interactions with people. How much of the day are you "on"? On the crisis of creativity, and keeping your inspiration alive in both life and work, there is a certain amount of emotional gymnastic routines I find myself in all the time. My good friend Dan Fishback, wrote a song that inspired me to think about how much I work on addressing my own process, how much one does because it feels safe rather than pushing them selves to where they really need to do!

lyrics

Guess my days are getting rather predictable
My bills paid and my god satisfied
But there are grave stakes in getting to comfortable
I have so much life to live
And so much love to give

And the man gets his due propers every night
And I need to keep it interesting
I must escape the grip of monotony
But who has the energy
For eight performances a week

When your act is cold and tired
Breaking your neck from working on it
Wrecking your wrists from pulling on it
You get worn and wired
Due to a lack of inspiration
But my good friend says "the act of creation should hurt" so let it hurt
And summon all my aces, and I'll call places

A brake down at the end of the second act
A belting tenor forgets his last lines
A stunned crowd sits and wonders how to react
They stare at his open mouth
And wait for genius to pour out

So routine is by nature the kiss of death
When you make love or make a song it can kill
So I will wait for the tenor to get his lines,
And when they come back to him
He can begin again.

When your act is cold and tired
Breaking your neck from working on it
Wrecking your wrists from pulling on it
You get worn and wired
Due to a lack of inspiration
But my good friend says "the act of creation should hurt" so let it hurt
And summon all my aces, and I'll call places
